The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett
Welcome to my first Book of the Month post. Each month I recommend one of my favourite novels. This informal book club (sort of) introduces a variety of fiction authors and genres to keep you entertained during those long lockdown days.
The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett
My first choice for Book of the Month made me laugh so hard my sides hurt. The Wee Free Men by Sir Terry Pratchett tells the story of Tiffany Aching, a young girl who longs to be a witch. When her younger brother is kidnapped by the Queen of the Fairies, Tiffany enlists the help of the tiny but terrifying Nac Mac Feegle (also known as The Wee Free Men) to get him back.
This is technically a fantasy comedy novel for Young Adults, but adults of all ages will love this story – even those who don’t normally enjoy fantasy.
Tiffany Aching is a great protagonist: fearless, fierce and funny. But The Wee Free Men are the stars of this novel. Tiny blue pixies with red hair, tattoos galore, great accents, and a homicidal tendency to violently attack anything that crosses their path. Clan leader, Rob Anybody, and the buzzard-aviator, Hamish, are two of the best characters in all fantasy fiction.
This book will make you laugh… a lot – which is something we all need at the moment. And there’s more: The Wee Free Men is the first novel in a series of five about Tiffany Aching and these crazy pixies.
